On March 27th, ModRetro confirmed the long awaited release of Chantey for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Chromatic platforms. Chantey is an open world rhythm based role playing RPG developed via Game Boy Studio software. Previously, Chantey had only been confirmed for a Q1 release in 2025, and just barely managed to meet that target.

A demo for Chantey can be found here., branded as the prologue to the proper game, which has an estimated completion time of ten hours. Chantey was developed by Gortyn Code, whose website can be visited here. Their indie game studio is based out of Greece, though Chantey itself is only playable in English as of this writing.

Chantey is set in the mid-seventeenth century during the Golden Age of piracy, albeit in an alternative version of this setting where heavy metal music is more the norm than sea shanties. K.C. Apostolakis is credited with the game design, programming, graphics, and sound, while the song “Nomad” being provided courtesy of Wise Nomad. To commemorate the game’s formal March 26th release, Gortyn Code put out a short launch trailer showing off what the game looks like in context.
