manga Dr. Slump and the Metroid franchise. I also write game reviews and articles every now and then
for them. I also create cover art
for Hardcore Gaming 101’s books along with many other talented artists. Recently I did the box art for Premium Edition Games’ recent release of Bobby Six Seven, I am anxious to see the physical version of this once it is released.”
Thor added “One thing I’ve learned with trying to have an art career
is that where you start is not necessarily where you will end
up. When I was in high school, I wanted to be a comic book artist.
I was a tiny bit successful at that thanks to the indie boom of the 90s but when the 90s bust hit it sucked most of the air out of that dream. I had to find a way to get my art out there so I tried branching out to other areas where my art might fit. Around 2011 I discovered OCRemix. net and MC Frontalot which opened up my eyes to nerdcore hip hop and video game music remixes; two groups that I could possibly make
connections with for art. Through these groups I met Mega Ran and I found my place for the time being doing a ton
of art for him and
his albums. Right around the same
time Nintendo Force Magazine came into being when Nintendo Power quit publishing. I emailed them about doing art and the rest was history. I started out wanting to draw for Marvel or DC and ended up doing art for something that means more to me, so I guess I did what I set out to do!”
DEXTER
Picking up the reins in November of 2021 and handling all
our current needs is
Dexter
Morrill. We found him thanks to our friend Kris Krohn of the RetroWorld Expo in Hartford, CT. Before working with us he worked on a webcomic for RetroWareTV and the program guides and miscellaneous work for RetroWorld Expo. After meeting
at that expo, we kept the conversation flowing and when the opportunity came up for him to step in after Thor, he jumped at it.
Dexter told us that “My first cover was a doozy and I received the most comments for it! Tasked with honoring the 20th anniversary of the original
XBox, I wanted to create something unmistakably
Microsoft to honor the legacy. My own personal favorite though might be the cover for the music games issue. I wanted to capture the ultimate concert performance and I am really happy with how dynamic and colorful it turned out.”
He is inspired by art all around him including Captain N: The Game Master by how the characters were designed based on 8- and 16-bit graphics. He recently finished rewatching and discussing all 3 seasons of the show with Josh Covel on the Still Loading Podcast.
Both of these artists are continuing to do work in the space. You can check out Dexter Morrill on social media @DexterMorrill on Twitter/X, @dexter_morrill on Instagram
