Gremlin’s last game in this series, the arcade racer is a gem. Set in the year 2962, the game was a departure from previous games in the series as it was set in outer space and had weapons. Nevertheless, the solid racing experience the series was known for is still intact.
WHY WE LOVE IT: The weapons? The outer space locale? Doesn’t mean much. The weapons don’t add much to the gameplay and the levels don’t look much different from anything on this planet. The fact that it was a racing game with a real story was cool for the time as well. However, a four-player mode made it truly unique for its time.
ZOOL: NINJA OF THE NTH DIMENSION
George Allan’s platformer was released on nearly every console of the 16-bit era, but it was something special on the Amiga. One of the best games on the console, it helped add even more legitimacy to Gremlin. While quite a different game from anything in the Monty series, it was another excellent character-driven platformer.
WHY WE LOVE IT The 16-Bit era had quite a few forgotten platformers, but Zool is different. It’s fast, it’s colorful and it’s got plenty of character, thanks to a slew of great character animations and fun tunes. If you grew up playing speedy platformers like Sonic the Hedgehog and Bubsy, but never tried Zool, you’re missing out on a wonderful experience.
