This John Hancock is much smarter than his 22-year old self ever was...
accustomed to. The action buttons were squishy, along with the other semi-nonresponsive buttons on the top of the controller. I just wanted to enjoy the better-looking games than the 2600, only to moan when I had to use one of the worst-designed controllers I could think of. While now there are alternatives to enjoy the 5200 library, my 22-year-old self did not know of these options at the time.”
Scott Kundel: “In the late 90’s,
I asked my mom to buy me the Microsoft SideWinder Dual Strike controller for Christmas. It’s a mix of a controller and a mouse/ keyboard in one unit.
I thought playing games like Doom, Half-life, and Flight Simulator would be fun, but it was so hard to learn and use that I put it away in the closet and never touched it again.
Years later, when my parents moved to a new house, she gave me a
box of my old stuff. I found that controller, and it brought back all
of the old memories, but I knew it was so terrible I would not want to keep it. I dropped it off at a local Goodwill store, and that was the end of that controller! It turns out
the dual analog controller set-up we use today is far superior, so I am not surprised this product had a short lifespan!”
“PC controllers might have been the worst variety of terrible controllers up to the mid-2000s.”
