fact, one look at The Immortal and any modern age gamer will think of games the likes of Diablo and Blood Omen: The Legacy of Kain.
Add in a slew of brutal ways to kill your opponents and it’s even got a little Mortal Kombat in it. A perfect concoction of difficulty, innovation and an excellent score and it’s a fun throwback experience on the AntStream Arcade. “I believe that The Immortal is a misunderstood game,” the game’s programmer Kevin McGrath said. “If you classify it as an RPG, you’ll be disappointed. Sure, it has a wizard, goblins, magic, an inventory, and battles, but it doesn’t share other classic RPG features (like character progression, randomized drops, etc.). In my view, The Immortal is more about solving puzzles and advancing through the dungeon and plot. It’s closer to Myst than it is to Ultima. I guess I would hope that The Immortal gets known more for being an incredibly difficult puzzle game, and for having ‘fatalities’ before Mortal Kombat.
“It was an early attempt at making an adventure game have a little more of an action component,” the game’s producer Don Traeger said. “We were in love with the adventure gameplay of it, but we were trying to make it a little more action gameplay-centric, so people would think, ‘What’s that?’ We were a little bit like Gauntlet in away. It was in a similar vein. Ultimately, I see it as
a game that was trying to actionize the adventure category.”
