YOUR OWN ARCADE! DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
Old School Gamer surveyed its friends running nationally and regionally known retro arcades and found out that there are
By Ryan Burger
Defender - Great game from the early days developed by Eugene Jarvis.
Mortal Kombat 1 or 2 - Love these two, I can barely beat the opponents once past the first couple, but always a blast in 2 player mode.
Centipede/Millipede - Atari early classic that you need to have one of these two.
Donkey Kong - King of Kong, that’s all I have to say about that!
Robotron 2084 - Oh my gosh, I can get to the Brains but then get my butt kicked, the twin stick shooter that I love!
Joust - Jousting with large birds...Yes! Frogger - Simple game until the cars start
speeding up.
Dig Dug - Strange concept of a game, but one I love to play and people are able to take a hold of quickly after watching a friend play.
Pole Position - The first popular racing game! Q*Bert - A Warren Davis original and an
awesome game!
Gauntlet - 4 player dungeon exploring classic. The first arcade game I ever bought for my house!
Asteroids - Oh my, I loved this game, the vectors are cool, and the remake by modern Atari is even more awesome!
Neo Geo MVS - So many great games on this multi-platform. Metal Slug, King of Fighers and more.
NBA Jam - He’s going DOWNTOWN....love the action and love playing against friends.
some games you have to have to consider yourself a retro arcade. We started by listing the most popular games on the KLOV.Com site (Museum of the Game / ®International Arcade Museum® - Killer List of Video Games®) and then tweaked things from there. In our opinion, you need to have the below dedicated machines in your arsenal (no 60- in-1 boards, no MAME, none of that stuff.)
While these may not be the most popular games that get played all the time, as a discussion with Doc Mack of Galloping Ghost brought up to me, they are ones that are needed to be considered a Retro Arcade. Its goes right with what I told my son Aaron and we joke about regularly when one of us or both of us visit a place with arcade video games. If it doesn’t have Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga or one of the Ms. Pac/Galaga combo machines I wouldn’t even call it an Arcade!
The Twenty Needs
Ms Pac-Man - Pac-Man may have been the original game, but Ms. Pac-Man’s ghosts are so much smarter.
Galaga - My personal favorite game of all time. I can get to about the 10th level but that’s it.
Space Invaders - the first big game that ate up millions of tokens/quarters or 100-Yen tokens in the case of Japan
Street Fighter 2 - The biggest game that brought the arcade revival of the early 90s along with it’s gory cousin we will mention after Defender.
