On May 23rd of 2024, just as this issue was being worked on, Atari ended the oldest home console video game war ever. While theoretically that war
ended back in 1984 when Mattel closed down what was left of Intellivision development, that war has most definitively ended now, with Atari purchasing
all of the Intellivision assets, with the exception of the Amico project. The name Intellivision, all of the games developed for Intellivision, and other platforms and intellectual properties, have gone over to the revived Atari company and brand.
“Uniting Atari and Intellivision after 45 years ends the longest-running console war in history,” said Mike Mika, Studio Head at Digital Eclipse, an Atari-owned game studio.
“This was a very rare opportunity to unite former competitors and bring together fans of Atari,
Intellivision, and the golden age of gaming. Ever since we made the announcement we have been receiving
a chorus of fan requests to purchase other classic
retro platforms. Everyone seems to want their favorite platform to get the Atari 50 treatment by Digital Eclipse and hardware releases like the 2600+!” -Wade Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Atari
“We are excited to unlock the creative energy of the Intellivision homebrew community. Anything we do
to increase accessibility and demand for Intellivision games will benefit those developers.” -Matt Burnett, VP of Strategic Operations at Atari
Intellivision Running Man shirts were available right next to the Atari Fuji shirts on the Atari website on May 24th!
